Behind the Curtain

I have complained and shared my frustration with you about my current job.  A project that will, in essence, never end.  Let me pull back the curtain, and show you why it is the way it is.

8 weeks ago:
The CFO decided we needed to put together a document outlining some of the decisions made from the project and submit this document to a couple executives.  I pulled out my document outlining these things, gave it to his team who he had assigned the task, and they put together a draft of the document.  (Basically they reformatted my document and added a bunch of supporting material.)

7 weeks ago:
His team sat down with him to review said document. The CFO had feedback – feedback that made this document become a 30 plage document instead of the 5 page one that was more appropriate.  He had them update it and hand deliver the document to the executives.

6 weeks ago:
The CFO and I met for 2 hours with these executives answering their questions about this huge document. We received approval on some things, but on others, they wanted more information or needed to review it with members of their own team.

4 weeks ago:
I am in another meeting with the CFO and executive involved in the meeting. The executive mentions to me that she had received some of the info I sent, but had not reviewed it.  The CFO started getting upset believing that I had changed info without his approval.  The executive assured him it was not the case.

2 weeks ago:
The Executive mentions in a meeting she had lost a portion of the document and asked if I could resend it.

1 week ago:
The woman who had an electronic copy of the document was back from vacation, so sent me a copy of the document that I, in turn, sent off to the executive.  She replied with the CFO included thanking me.  He claimed he needed to see all documents first before I sent anything to the executive.  Then in a follow-up meeting began to chastise me in front of the executive.  I told him that this was not a document that had changed, etc, etc.  He wanted another copy himself.

3 days ago:
He sent an email to his team with the attached document saying that they needed to review and approve this document. (Yes, this IS the same document they created two months ago – and reviewed with him.)  He also made it known that the executive was not to proceed forward with the document until his team had a chance to review it.

2 days ago:
The woman who put the document together sent a mass email to all involved pointing out that this was the document from 8 weeks ago. She actually was the source of the document, therefore it was safe to assume she approved it.

Today:
The Executive is now going to review the document and hopefully give us the remaining approvals in the next few weeks. Yes, we are now back where we were 6 weeks ago.

And they wonder why their project is delayed…..

It IS a mystery……

Ha! Sounds like you work for the government… although 8 weeks would be 16 weeks in government work.
