Saturday Morning Musing

on
Today starts the Tour de France!

I am always amazed at these guys. And the best commentators? The European guys. The second broadcast is usually rebroadcast with these American guys commentating from the studio….they are annoying. If you watch, watch the first broadcast if you can.  In watching it this year, I realized how many of the cyclists I recognize. As the girls who are being forced to watch it ask about different guys, I am able to go “oh, he’s the points champ from last year. Just want until they get into the mountains as he is amazing.”

Of course, there are two big stories this year – Lance Armstrong versus Alberto Contador – teammates last year but teammates who started fighting after Alberto Contador broke rank and threw the team plan out out the window. Contador went on to win it. The interviews with Lance were hilarious because of what he was really saying between the lines of his words. He’s a class act. Not calling Cantador out specifically, but making remarks that were pretty clearly directed at Cantador. In the end, Lance took third, joined forces with Radio Shack, formed a new team, and stole some of the riders from the old team onto the new one.

The other big story seems to be Floyd Landis and his repeated accusations of how Lance doped. I guess his story has changed so many times that it is difficult to take him seriously.  The European commentators are pretty pissed off at how he is affecting cycling. And I guess he’s come out just today (or maybe yesterday) and made more accusations. Who knows….who cares.  Lance pointed out in a brief statement during the California ride that Landis has lied so many times, it’s hard to take him seriously.

Oh, there is a third thing – Lance is not doing the tour again. To quote home, it’s taking him away from his family too much – and his kids are asking him to stay home.  He wants to be dad. He’ll do triathlons instead. Look for him at Kona Ironman in 2011 (which is our prediction).

Work….ahh….work…..it’s over for the week….I’m the enemy now. I’m okay with that as I’m only a contractor who I’m fine with being the bad guy. Plus, I really REALLY don’t care. This will be my approach going forward:

Last night, we had dinner with some online friends and their child.  They came over for dinner since they were all in town. It was a lot of fun. I always laugh at the kids and how they interact at first. The chickens broke the ice for them.  The adults – we enjoyed some great beer brought by them – and we enjoyed a good meal.  It was a lot of fun – and a great way to end the week.

Tomorrow….tomorrow is the half marathon. Am I ready? Ready or not. My knee hurt about a week and a half ago. I took some time off which was good, but I feel like I should have been doing more. I’ve read and heard that this feeling is the sign of a successful taper. Still….I can’t help but worry a bit. The knee is fine now. But still. Tonight, we are going to stay on the island with some family friends. This way  I won’t have an insane commute onto the island in the morning. It gets a bit crazy.  The race starts at 6:45am.  I definitely have a nap in my future.
