Day 93 – Zoo Bombers

on

Zoo Bombing is when you take an old bike up to the zoo which sits atop of the west hills and ride it down the windy back road.
At night.
As fast as you can.

The bombers were piling their bikes piled on a bike rack near a funky pizza shop, but the city had a fit saying it was disruptive and such. After lots of battling back and forth, where the bombers claimed rather successfully that when not in use it was a piece of art – the city decided to give them a place where it could be art – and less of an eye sore.

Portland is a huge cycling town who wants to add something like 100+ miles of bike lanes to the city over the next 10 years. To make it safer, they have already converted some of the lanes from car lanes into exclusive bike lanes. They hope to model our city’s bike approach after Amsterdam. This is why the battle was successful for the bikers. They didn’t want to come across as anti-bike. It was a good compromise. Definitely makes those visiting wonder about the story.
