Day 302 – Discoveries

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen me refer to the discovery we made today.  The discovery that the past owners of our house decided to use screws to lay the carpet in the spare bedroom.  And, this is not a euphemism for sex….which is too bad given it would have been more fun than dealing with the reality of the situation.

What made it more of a challenge: they laid the carpet using screws then put in the baseboard. This meant in many cases we could not remove the screw without tearing out the baseboard which we did not do.  Instead, we bought quarter round and installed it thus effectively hiding the screw mess.

How did this project begin you might ask? Well, I woke up this morning and decided to paint the spare room that Derek occupied while staying with us.  The room had been destroyed by our former nanny when she stayed with us, and I had never gotten a chance to fix it. (Imagine the use of large nails to hang unframed posters  – a lot of them – and you will get an idea of the state of the walls in the room.)  I was going to vacuum the carpet but decided I was done with the shitty carpet in that room and tore it out.  You can see where I’m going with this project.  It’s almost done really. Just have to do the ceiling and the baseboards tomorrow. Oh and paint the floor.  (I’m so fucking done with carpet in this house.)

Small project turned large…but it’ll be nice to have it done.  Then on to the huge room at the top of the stairs.  That’s a big project regardless, but a necessary one.  Wonder if the idiots used glue to install the carpet in there?  It’s essentially the only thing we haven’t encountered thus far.

I’ve embarked on similar projects on whims too!

This is par for the course with Emmy and the house. There is a half-assed project leftover from the previous owners and Emmy decides to take a day and completely re-do it. Ask her about the island in the kitchen some time!

Ugh – the lady who owned this house before us was l-a-z-y. Luckily, it was all relatively fix-able. And chicks who do their own demo and reno rawk!

It never ceases to amaze me on the ‘short cuts’ taken by people doing half-assed renovations!! Good luck with getting it back together!!
