Playing God

I reminded a friend of mine whose pet was at the end of their life and struggling that our pets expect us to be their God.  We decide their fate – and we have to consider not our own feelings but whether or not their quality of life is there.  In my friend’s case, they were waffling back and forth about whether they were ready to let their pet go – not considering the fact their pet was struggling and not happy.

We have been reminded the last few days that we too are playing God….for our old 14 year old dog.  He has had some issues with his back over the past year, but he has been happy and healthy.  So, we have been working with him.  Over the last month, we have noticed things getting harder for him.  The last couple of days it has become clear – it’s time.

So over the next couple of days, we will be saying good-bye.

Because in the end, he trusts us to know when it is time to let go – let him be at peace.  And we don’t want to let him down.

I’m proud of you for putting your dog and his pain/suffering above your own needs to keep him around. At the same time, I am so sorry you have to lose your buddy. All the love and hugs to you and your family.
