A Change of Plans

Yesterday morning, we woke up and told the kids to get ready. We were going to take them on a surprise adventure. We had them get ready, and in the midst of it all, we got a call from SG’s wife. “Are you going to the baby shower today? If so, will you take my gift?”

The minute she said it, I realized we had screwed up…..and forgot about the party. Crap.

So, we shifted gears – grabbed a present – changed clothes – and got ready to go. It was a family party, so we all went. We didn’t have time to grab the gift beforehand, but we told SG’s wife we would come by after to take her for margaritas since she was having a crappy day.

The party was fun. A mix of swinger couples and vanilla family members. It was fantastic really. The expectant mom has three girls already – and the baby is the first child for her new husband. Indigo and DJ love the girls – specifically the current youngest who is DJ’s age. As we were getting ready to leave, the youngest decided our girls were not leaving. She was keeping them. Garbanzo made an off-the-cuff remark about coming to get them in the morning – and next thing you know, the girls were spending the night. As Garbanzo said afterward, never underestimate the power of persuasion of a 12-year old girl. So, we left – sans kids.

We met up with SG and his wife at their house. It was a pretty funny, laid back night. We took them out for dinner. Then went back to their house and ended up watching a movie as we all teased one of their teenagers about his obsession with buying a car. We felt like teenagers trying not to get caught by the parents as we were all curled up on the couches with hands on each other. The kids would start coming into the room, and we’d shift back to appropriateness. There was no playing around – just touching and cuddling on the couches together – as long as their teenagers were out of the room. SG is tricky though – he’s good at hiding his groping from the kids.  And I kept laughing at him.  Granted, that was easy since we were sitting on the couch that required us to be squished together in order for me to see the screen. That was just a damn shame that was required.

Despite the offer to stay, we headed home. We had dogs to let out and chickens to lock into their coop. It was nice driving home at our own pace, not having to referee the kids, and just talking about things.

This morning, we headed back down to get the kids. They had a great time. And it turned out another cousin who happens to be Indigo’s age had also stayed the night. When we arrived, the kids were all in the driveway making the world’s longest, strangest, most challenging hopscotch course ever. It was 137 squares when they ended it. We drank coffee with friends, the kids went on one last bike ride, and we headed back.

This afternoon has been lots of packing. DJ goes to sleep away camp tomorrow for the week. It’s a science camp, and she’s excited. And naps. It was a late night for everyone, so sleep today has been nice. Even if this weekend has been one giant change of plans.
