Restarting the Week

on
Monday I woke up with what I thought was a simple headache. As I would learn later, it was definitely a migraine. I got on the train and made it to work. I really don’t recall much of the trip given the fact I was pretty out of it. My objective for going to work was simply to get through the important meeting so I could go home at lunch.  THAT was my plan.  But, all I wanted was to….

After my first two meetings, I realized that I needed to go home. My brain was not working. My stomach was not happy with the pain in my head. And sitting with my eyes closed was heaven. I sent a text to Garbanzo asking if he would swing by to get me on his way home. He was at swim lessons with the girls. I begged out of my meeting – the important one – and headed home.

Whenever I have a migraine or even a simple bad headache, I usually do a combo of Tylenol and Advil with a coffee chaser. Usually does a great job. This time, it just kept me from napping. So I put on a movie and laid listening to it as I tried to sleep. Just laying there with my eyes closed was heaven.  Nothing was really working through. It did finally get a bit better mid-afternoon. It went to a dull ache. What a great way to start the week!

I did have an interesting chat with TL about text messaging. He relayed to me a story that made me wonder.  How many people have “smart phones’ (Blackberry, iPhone, Android, etc) and allow their kids to use them – like take them out of your sight and use them?  Or anyone else for that matter? Or I am in the minority of people who guard it with my life – and lock it with a password so no one can use it?

For me, a smart phone is a computer – your personal computer – with email, texts, pictures, phone logs and contact info. Everything incriminating is on there. I do delete things occasionally, but generally it stays on my phone.  I have a password on it. I lock the screen anytime I set it down. The only thing I have not done is disabled the text messages from showing up on the screen if I get one. Mainly it’s because I don’t leave it out of my sight long enough to worry about a message if one should come up. In fact, if my phone rings and it’s on the charger, my kids will yell at me to answer it.  They won’t even bring it to me because I have conditioned them that it is my phone – like my computer – they leave it alone.

I am the same way with my computers. Work or home, the computer doesn’t get left without getting locked. One of the main reasons is because people can access it as you and, in essence, be you in email or chats or texts (if someone gets your cell phone), so I don’t allow for that chance. I lock everything to keep myself safe but the other person feeling confident it is me.  I guess that’s why it was my first reaction to do that on my iPhone when I got it.  TL tends to be the same way. Is it our IT backgrounds that make us the exceptions? Or do others take such precautions? How about on your regular cell phones?

I’ve decided that I’m going to start wrapping playmates in bubble wrap or other protective gear. I’ve had two get injured in a month – and not in fun and exciting ways. One I learned got a pretty seriously injury Sunday night. Toss in my own knee issue, and it hasn’t been a good month for any of us.  Hopefully this trend will NOT continue.

But maybe I’m looking at this wrong….

…..wait, I guess that’s the wrong snarky response for this situation….oh, well, I’m not known to be sunny……
But the message IS good. I may use that at work today. The downside for those getting them thrown by me – I throw hard and aim for the head. It’s a catcher thing…..yeah, that’s it….

I hope the migraine is gone today!

I’m pretty much the same way as you when it comes to computer security. But you know who I work for and the security-conscious culture that entails.

I like that you haven’t disabled message preview on your phone, I’ve gotten some pretty good reactions from you when I’ve sent you some special pictures 😉

Hubman – It is gone…finally. Thanks!
And given who you work for and what is on your phone, I know you lock both from prying eyes. You are the one responsible for my habit of laying my phone face down on any surface now. 😉

Ugh, bad headaches… when I wake up with one, I’ve got it for days. I’m a HUGE Advil fan.

I’m much the same as you are about privacy and security on my computer or phone. You need a password even to wake up my laptop! My phone is always locked too.

  4. Migraines are awful. I am glad yours is gone.

I am not careful about the phone, since the kids want the Fart Piano and Talking Carl.

I get migraines every so often and the ONLY thing that helps is lying with my eyes closed. I hope it went away!

About the phone. I have a friend who lets her young children play with her iPhone occasionally to keep them entertained when she needs them to be (early mornings, at a soccer game, while dinner is cooking) and it always makes me cringe bc THERE IS *NO WAY* I WOULD GIVE MY PHONE TO MY KIDS.

I guard my phone but they also know they better not touch it.

I don’t have kids to keep my phone from but I don’t let anyone touch my electronics. They’re MINE. hahaha I’m normally set to a pretty high level of paranoia, add in technology and it just turns the dial up all the way.
