ASM’s Annual Holiday Treat Exchange – Emmy’s Recipe

See the lovely Ms Another Suburban Mom for the whole list of people participating in the exchange.

This year, I will be sharing my Grandma’s Famous Sugar Cookie Recipe.  We made thousands of these during the holiday season in our house.  I remember standing in my grandma’s kitchen with her making them and decorating them.  And, in our own house as a kid, my mom would mix up the dough, my dad would roll & cut them out, mom would man the ovens, and my brothers & I would decorate.  All the while, we would be listening to Christmas music.  We gave these cookies to everyone – friends, family, mailman, teachers, everyone.

Each year since I moved out of my parents’ house, we have made these cookies. Gotta continue the tradition.  This year, there will be hedgehogs.

My apologies for how I write recipes. I know it’s baking and you are, in theory, supposed to be accurate and all – but this is not one of those recipes. In fact, my mom and aunt had to translate it from my grandma’s “a handful of this” recipe, thus the reason this one is more forgiving.

Grandma’s Sugar Cookie Recipe

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
2/3 cup milk
4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cream of tarter
nutmeg to taste

Mix together butter, sugar and eggs.  Add dry ingredients and milk.  Add as much nutmeg as you’d like. It’s the nutmeg that gives these a unique flavor.

Refrigerate for at least 1 hr. But, really, the longer the better – like overnight.

Bake at 350 until done.
For at least one batch, bake until brown – like on the darker side of brown. Trust me – you will be fighting people for these cookies.  At the annual Christmas eve gathering, my dad and my uncles would sort through all of the cookies to find the dark ones.  They are that awesome.

Decorate with your favorite frosting or decorations.
Enjoy!
