No Regrets

Dear Garbanzo,
Fourteen years ago today, we stood in front of our friends and family and pledged our love and commitment to each other.  And I ignored your request to add ‘obey’ into the vows.  I think we’ve done okay without it.

I don’t know what I expected fourteen years ago from getting married. I guess I kept thinking about Robert Fulghum’s book “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” where he suggests the following lesson: When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.”  We were both going into the “real world” together – holding hands, sticking together, and watching out for each other.  It made sense for me really.  Doing this with someone who was my best friend, the one who knew everything about me – the good, the bad and the ugly, and the man I loved more than I knew possible.

So, we stood in a church – the place you didn’t necessarily want to be – in front of our families (who thought we were too young) and with our friends (who were giddy for us), and vowed to love and cherish each other through everything.

I think we’ve done pretty well for ourselves. Our commitment to each other is probably stronger than it has ever been. We’ve lived through poorer and richer.  We added to our families and cried like the babies we had when they were born. And through the rough times, we tightened our grips on each other rather than letting whatever was happening pull us apart.

You used to perpetually ask, ‘any regrets?’  You were convinced even from the start of our relationship that I was one day going to wake up and ask “oh, god, what have I done.”

My answer is the same to that question as it was 14 years ago. No regrets.

I would marry you all over again in a heart beat. (But, I will request we elope…less stress, more sex, and we can actually eat a meal together in celebration instead of getting Burger King on the way back to the hotel.)

I love you very much.
You are the only person I would want to go through life with side-by-side.
Happy anniversary!
~Emmy

PS: I almost forgot. I have no intention of dissolving our marriage contract. You get me for at least one more year. 🙂

(The above picture was taken by Garbanzo’s best friend during our freshman year of college. He was doing a project and had been taking pictures of Garbanzo. I was being the lighting person – or in other words, I was holding something to eliminate the shadows. Towards the end, he decided he had a new idea – he wanted me in the shot. This was – by his declaration – the best shot he took that day. I love how young we look.  I also love the expression.  And the photo effect – all done through development processes.  Gotta love film.)
