WHAT?

“Indigo, take your bike up to the house and lock it up.”
“WHAT?”
“Take your bike up to the house and lock it up.”
“WHAT?”
“TAKE YOUR BIKE…”

I have worried since my first child was born that one of them would have a hearing problem.  Indigo has got it, I’m afraid.

I guess I should be thankful that she hasn’t had the ear infections I did by this age.  The ear infections that had me up all night in tears.  The ear infections that always resulted in a burst ear drum.  The ear infections that led to SIX sets of tubes being put in my ears over about a 6 year period of my life.

When Indigo had her ears tested a year ago, her doctor a wonderfully pragmatic woman who never overreacts to anything basically wanted to take a wait-and-see approach.  The baseline test they give at that age isn’t foolproof.  It is wrought with errors, but is meant to find the obvious cases.  Since she walked that line between issue and non, we were going to see what the school hearing test said.  The school results – her hearing is fine – which surprised Garbanzo, me and her teacher.

The last few weeks, the number of “WHATs” has increased to a point where we have to get her tested again.  I’ve always asserted that about 75% of my issues were related to someone not doing an allergy test – an allergy test that would have shown I had an allergy requiring treatment.  To this day, my hearing gets bad when my allergies are bad.  I do not think this is a coincidence.

I guess we shall see. I know tomorrow, there will be a call made to the pediatrician’s office to schedule an appointment to talk about this issue and next steps.

I just don’t want her to have tubes.  Tubes fucked up my childhood.  Sounds harsh, but they did.  I couldn’t even run through a fucking sprinkler without making sure water didn’t get in my ears – a larger challenge than one would think.  How about washing your hair?  Same challenge.  And if water did get into them, holy hell – I was in for a long couple days of the worst ear infection imaginable.

I guess we’ll see what happens with Indigo.  I hope she just has some fluid we can get to drain with some medicine.  I really don’t want her to go through what I did.  I guess we’ll see.

  1. Oh man, I didn’t have six sets of tubes, I just had one that didnt’t fall out for four years. And I got them 2 years after we had a pool put in our yard. That sucked! Amd I still go deaf whenever I get a cold.

I feel for your daughter. Good luck!

Well, normally DD can hear a gnat poot while sitting on a cotton ball.. But she can’t hear me yelling two feet away to ‘pick up your toys!” With her, it’s selective hearing loss.. :):)
Hope Indigo’s tests turn out well!!

  3. Both my boys had tubes…they had the newer ones put in that they never had to worry about getting water in thier ears.

They both still say WHAT all the time…I think it’s just a thing they go thru.

I hope it is something that can be corrected with medicine and a little focus. I would hate for Indigo to go through that. But, I think that proper hearing for her would help out in some other areas as well!

RLofTFC – Yeah, I’m the same way. If I get a cold or my allergies are driving me nuts, I’m deaf.

Paige – we’ve all been watching test results because she seems to have selective hearing as well. I guess we’ll see.

HB&GP – I knew they were working on new ones. Hell, I had four totally different kinds during my various stings. Gives me hope.

Garbanzo – I hope we can get it worked out too. It will help her so much.
