Friday Field Trip: Home Is Where the Heart Is

I follow Photojojo on Twitter, a newsletter about photography full of various ideas, some tips and tricks, and lots of gadgets.  Saturday, I received a link to what was described as a “video of a guy who shaves his head and face, walks across China while growing it back.”  I had to watch it.

The Longest Way 1.0 – one year walk/beard grow time lapse from Christoph Rehage on Vimeo.

Which led me to wonder, what is this guy doing? Why did this guy decided to walk across China?  So, I went to his website: www.thelongestwayhome.com – a very interesting website.

First off, I learned he isn’t just walking across China but around the world.
Why is he doing it?  He is truly trying to find home.  He grew up in an “extreme household” as he describes (read: bad situation) – and really has never felt he has a place to call home.  So, he packed up his stuff and set out on a quest to find his home in the world.  This quest has lasted over 4.5 years!

The site contains his pictures, his blog and video from his quest.  The pictures are amazing.  The stories aren’t bad either.  It definitely makes you examine that statement “home is where the heart is”.  For him, I think, he is trying to figure out what is in his heart in hopes that will help lead him home.

Check out his story.  Definitely worth a read.

He started to look like Screech from Saved by the Bell and then started to look like Jesus.

I liked him better clean-cut. I know that wasn’t the point of him doing this(more about the self-journey and all), but just sayin.’

  3. Wow this is really cool.

    Thank you for sharing.

I shared this with my students this past year. It was fascinating to see the changes, both physical and mental/emotional that he underwent.
